Mary McClellan Hospital - Cambridge, NY
In 1915, Cambridge native Edwin McClellan conferred with the town’s community members with plans to build a hospital with the goal of improving the quality of medical care for local residents. With that, McClellan would oversee the construction of Mary McClellan Hospital, named after his mother. Shortly after opening in 1919, Mary McClellan Hospital would open a joint nursing school with Yale University and Skidmore College. Backed with a large endowment set up by Edwin McClellan, Mary McClellan Hospital became the most prominent medical facility in the region.

Ultimately, trends in the delivery of medical care made it difficult for small rural hospitals to prosper. Mary McClellan Hospital would transfer more and more patients to larger urban hospitals throughout the 1990s before closing in 2003.
