Mid-Orange Correctional Facility - Warwick, NY
In the 1970s the New York Training School for Boys was reopened as the state-operated, medium security Mid-Orange Correctional Facility. Opening with an inmate population of 400, it quickly rose to 1,000 until more facilities were constructed on the grounds. There were several innovative programs for inmates that were implemented at Mid-Orange. In the Puppies Behind Bars program, inmates raised and trained puppies to become guide dogs for the disabled. The Corcraft commercial carpentry shop produced modular housing and components for public projects such as New York’s Florida Public Library.

On June 30, 2011 New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the Mid-Orange Correctional Facility would close as part of the greater reorganization of New York State prisons.
