Breezeway
from $25.00
This long corridor, which connected the admissions wards to the medical/surgical unit at Kings Park Psychiatric Center, was designed to allow the passage of a breeze between the two buildings. The idea of having corridors open to sunlight and air ventilation to aid the ill was a philosophy pioneered by Philadelphia psychiatrist Thomas Story Kirkbride in the mid-19th century. Patients last walked through this corridor in 1996 with the closing of Kings Park Psychiatric Center.
